Illovo’s 16 manufacturing plants are located across sub-Saharan Africa, producing brown and refined sugar together with a range of high-value downstream products for both domestic, regional and international markets.

Around 14 million tons of sugar cane are processed annually by 12 sugar mills under the group’s cane sugar integrated business sustainability model, maximizing the use of all input materials with very few waste products. The outcome is the production of granulated brown and refined sugar, a range of furfural-based downstream products and high-quality ethanol from molasses used to make potable and denatured spirits. Residue cane fibre in the manufacturing process, called bagasse, is combined with cane trash collected from harvested fields to provide a renewable feedstock for the co-generation of around 90% of the group’s electricity needs. Furthermore, water released from the cane during the extraction process is recycled within the factory, thereby reducing the reliance on external water sources, while organic and non-organic impurities captured in the milling process are returned to the field for use as a fertilizer.

We have recently seen rapid growth across our areas of business, with increased sugar production and efficiency of our operations. While continuously striving towards optimising the value from our core products, we remain alert to all of our economic, social and environmental impacts, driven by the group’s comprehensive sustainability programme which annually measures performance against set targets.
